In reading dozens of Union files I find the BRT represented some, maybe many
switchman long (decades) before the switchmans union was dissolved. I know
their union existed until at least 1966 because when my switchman grandfather
passed on that year there was a huge floral arrangement with the big red S at
the casket.
Research develops that the Switchmans Union of North America(SUNA),Order of
Railway Conductors(ORC),Brotherhood of Railroad Trainman(BRT) and the
brotherhood of locomotive firemen and engineers (BLF&E) merged in 1969 to form
the UTU.
Wonder when the switchman at Eola,Streator,La Salle,Ottawa,Rock
Falls/Sterling,Mendota,Kewaunee,Rockford, voted to go with BRT and why .
The one thing missing from many boxes of union files is any yard(SUNA or
BRT)files. The only references found are when road issues involve yardmen.
