Louis and Norm, thank you for your answers. The Prague (Schuyler) line was indeed cinder ballasted. Louis, your suggestion of old cross ties across the track with a pile of cinders on them sounds branch-line-y so I'll probably go that way when I build my layout. There was never very heavy power on the line-- until 1942 a pair of K-1's, briefly an R-5a and then a GP9.
