Looking at the photos I have of 9901, the panels under the cab windows seem to have the same sheen as the flat sheet metal on the sides. Here’s a portion of an Otto Perry photo of 9901, as the Sam Houston Zephyr.

The thread on the Aluminum twin hopper brought to mind a question I’ve had for a long time and I wonder if anyone has an explanation…
…..the inauguration photos and even later photos suggest that the 9901 and 9902 Twin Zephyr power units had a dull (or at least less-polished) panel under the cab windows than the 9900, 9903 and subsequent shovel nose units.
Has anyone else noticed this and come up with a reason why this was so and did it last the life of the units?
