For those who haven't heard this, Athearn Genesis is planning on releasing a new line of highly accurate 4600 cu ft ACF covered hoppers. These will be great replacements for the Accurail covered hoppers and will have specific railroad detail. The good news for us Q modelers is that these are cars that the Q had hundreds of! Hopefully Athearn has been in touch with the BRHS and other key Q modelers for details and photos. There were two main phases of these cars, the early and late. All the Q cars were the early phase but with some differences because of rules regarding high vs. low-mounted brake wheels which took affect during the years the cars were delivered. Here is a breakdown of what the Q had. All had gravity outlets with the exception of LO-8's 86690-86699. CBQ bought : - 86200-86689 LO-8 (490) built in 1966 (high brake wheel) - 86690-86699 LO-8 (10) built in 1966 (high brake wheel, pneumatic outlets) - 184400-184599 LO-8A (200) built in 1967 (low brake wheel) - 185150-185349 LO-8B (200) built in 1968 (low brake wheel) FWD bought : - 3051-3150 LO-8 (100) built in 1966 (high brake wheel)
- 3151-3250 LO-8A (100) built in 1967 (low brake wheel) That makes 1,100 LO-8, LO-8A, and LO-8B covered hoppers on the Q and FW&D. These will be a great addition to anyone's late 1960's Q freight car fleet! BTW, while on the subject of Q large capacity covered hoppers: I have the Tangent PS 4000 cu ft covered hoppers but never bought the 4740 cu ft. If anyone has one or two they are interested in parting with, please let me know off-list. I also need one of the Athearn RTR 2890 cu ft CB&Q HC-2 covered hoppers in BLACK. I have one of the brown ones, but never got a black one. If anyone has a black version they would sell, I am interested! And if anyone is looking for the brown version HC-2 (as delivered) there is one on eBay right now. These have been hard to find and rare on eBay.
