The thread about the Galena depot got me to look through the entire Q section
of the
Barriger library photos. I am unable to locate an index on either flickr or the
UMSL website. So Look on pg 4,photo 331. It shows 4 very well ballasted tracks
with all four signaled. I then went to Barrigers bio. He did spend 1933-41 as
RR chief of the government reconstruction finance board. There are many other
Chgo and Aurora div. photos in the collection.
Based on Overtons "Burlington Route" p338 the fourth main was installed between
Eola and Downers Grove in 1929-30. Based on my of collection of Aurora division
employee timetables the fourth main was shown in #75 dated 9/33 and was omitted
starting in #76 dated 1/34.
Maybe others know of a different location where there were 4 nicely main tracks
ballasted with steel mill slag and signaled but I don't. I'm thinking the shot
is between Naperville and Eola but not sure. Given the rural background it's
not east of Cicero.
Could this shot show the often discussed and debated 4th main on the east end ?
