Dave...That's a "station one mile" sign...I don't think that they are used anymore, but these signs were located one mile on each side of a station...Back in the day engineers were required to blow a "station whistle"...one long blast on the whistle when the train was one mile "out"....This notified the train crew as well as the Operator that the train was approaching a station.... One of the applications was that under Rule 907 or maybe it was 908 on certain branch lines trains could stand between the Station Signs without protecting against following extra trains. These branch lines would be designated by a note in the section of the Timetable pertaining to that Subdivision. ie Rule 907 in effect....I'll see if I can dig up an example on one of my old timetables. This provision, in effect, turned each station into a Yard and the provisions of Rule 93 would apply.

Hi
all,
Received a
question and attached image to identify what this sign was for on the BRHS
Facebook page this evening.
" I recently helped my mother
move a sign that was located on an old CBQ route just East of Brashear,
Missouri. The sign was on a tall cement post with a diamond shaped sign with the
letter S painted in black. We are trying to find out what the S stands for. The
track runs east/west so not sure if it stood for south. Any information would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you,"
Dave
