I think most are neglecting the fact that during the time the photo was taken, Orthochromatic photographic emulsion film was the only game in town. Ortho emulsions were sensitive to only blue and green light and has low sensitivity to orange and is practically insensitive to red, rendering it as black. Panchromatic film emulsion came later, sometime after 1930. Pan is sensitive to red, blue and green. The “Old Head” rail photographers still lecture on this topic. Regards... Jerry Albin
