Ah the good old days. I wonder if this wasn't on the tracks running North/South just south of Western Ave in route with transfers or to the stock yards. Not sure I would call that the lumber district as its a bit west of it.

Doubt the MILW had any right to enter the Q industry tracks in the lumber district itself.

Road rage (and the issue of gun control) is evidently not a new phenomena. From the Railway Age of April 1888 -

he problem of running a railroad in the “tough” lumber-district [Chicago] is not yet wholly solved. Last week, Thursday, a dispute arose at a grade crossing between a Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul and a Burlington switch train. Stones and pins were freely thrown, and one Burlington man, who was struck in the face by a lump of coal, drew his revolver and fired at the engine of the other train. A race on parallel tracks ensued and one of the engines, to gain time, was cut loose from its train. Which then ran back down a grade past some danger signals at a grade crossing, but no harm was done.
