1) Why would tarpped gons be used to ship "bagged sand"? 2) Cannot understand why silica sand, which is a premium grade for the mfg of glass and glass products, to Keokuk, IA. There are several casting and foundry operations in the neighborhood and they require "green sand" to form their molds. Silica product would require additional alloy materials to accom- polish the same results as "green" material. Because of the glass mfg's located in East Central Indiana large quantit- ies of silica sand from The Ottawa, IL area as opposed to New Buffalo, MI. Indianapolis, IN had the Chrysler and International Harvestor engine block casting operations; therefore, MI foundry sand was a major raw mtl commodity into the area. Same principal applied to MI, OH & ON casting plants. From Eola or Mendota it's a simple process to get to Galesburg and routed back to Keokuk. Many industries also received sand bagged in boxcars or tarped over in gondolas. Eric Mumper
