Hol - Leo makes a good case for the "shop train," particularly since it originated at Mendota where the ATC-equipped Class R locomotives were based to make the run to Sterling. Since all suburban trains of that era were exclusively powered by Class S 4-6-2's (except at the very end when Class S-4 4-6-4's made a brief appearance), I don't believe 2052 is pulling a dinky, but rather a local passenger train. Could well be, as you speculated, after the NW2's arrived to take over Sterling duties.

 

Also, I just read Leo's "Called For The Wrecker" article in the new Zephyr. Excellent article. I'd like to see more recollections like Leo's published in the Zephyr. Lastly, the middle photo on page 10 shows my late father M.L. Zadnichek (Chicago Division Supt.) at far right with head down talking into his Motorola battery powered radio telephone that he was never without while on the property. Dad was probably talking to the dispatcher to get a line-up or to see what else was going on at the time. Best Regards - Louis

W/o doing a search of ETTs one possibility could be the local from Mendota that was nicknamed "the shop train" as it brought many workers to the Aurora factories and the Q Aurora shops from points west before continuing on the east end as more or less a dinky.

WHAT local passenger run could it be?  Non-suburban passenger trains -- and some suburban trains, too -- carried at least one head-end car.  And in the late '40s-early '50s when this was likely taken, R-5s certainly were not being used in passenger service.  I would bet this was taken after the two NW2s had received ATC equipment and so it was only needed for the run to Sterling when one of the diesels was out of service.
