You fellows beat me to the punch with the replies regarding the as-delivered TCZ cars as shown in the Randall Passenger Car Library Budd Company CB&Q book.  That was one of the primary sources I used when I wrote " It does look like these cars came with FWDs when delivered".  Thank you both for the remainder of the information regarding the diaphragms.

My follow-up question is about others' experiences/suggestions for modeling the narrow diaphragms without experiencing operating problems.  The Passenger Car list has recently had a long discussion about problems with diaphragms binding and causing derailments on curves, for example.

I checked the David Randall Budd red book and you are correct the 47 TCZ and 48/49 CZ equipment and even the 1952 KCZ and 1956 DZ equipment were delivered with full width diaphragms but I believe they did not stay on long. 1950 Budd -built commuter cars had narrow width versions as it appears was the case with the 1956 delivered  Slumbercosches.

Dennis,

I believe that both the 1949 CZ and the 1947 TCZ equipment were built with full width diaphragms. All were later replaced. I think only the 1956 DZ equipment was built with narrow diaphragms.

Scott:

The early Zephyr equipment of the 30's and early 40's came equipped with full width diaphragms basically for aesthetic purposes to give the appearance of the train being continuous with no gaps between the cars.
As time went on the full width diaphragms became a maintenance issue as they did not allow access be tween the cars for service on hoses, couplers, etc. so the switch was made to narrow width diaphragms say mid to late 40's.
New car orders say late 40's and beyond including your 1947 Budd-built Twin Cities Zephyr consists came equipped with the narrow width diaphragms so as time went by the full width versions went by the wayside.

Thanks - Dennis Popish
