Charlie,

Great info! I never realized the Q tested a F-M switcher. Since I model Savanna and the MILW in Savanna was crawling with F-M's, I use a Walthers MILW H10-44 as power on the MILW transfer runs to the Q in Savanna. MILW also ran H16-44's in Savanna, so that is another option to get my F-M fix. Although I don't have any photos of the transfer runs but I don't think it is a stretch to imagine MILW used F-M's on the Q transfers.

Also very interesting on the Train Masters powering the commuter runs. The H24's were certainly very successful in commuter service on the SP in the Bay Area, so I could see them on another commuter line, like the Q in Chicago. Of course that gets into so much speculation - like what color scheme? While blackbird comes to mind, if they were bought for commuter service we might very well have seen silver Train Masters with a thin black or red stripe plying Chicago commuter rails! Maybe even nose stripes???

Somebody in the BRHS had a copy of an AFE for fuel costs to cover the use of a FM yard switcher demonstrator which worked at Western Avenue.  If I remember correctly there was even existed a film of it working.
Supposedly FM TrainMasters were considered to power the Commuter Service and a rendering of one is rumored to exist showing one crossing the Des Plaines River bridge.  The idea of pooling E8 and E9s with the mainline assignments  made more sense and simplified maintenance.
In discussing FM demonstrators someone...maybe Bat Masterson..said a Mechanical Dept guy left the Q to work at FM and it was not a happy situation and that FM would never have any chance to sell a locomotive to the Burlington because of it.

The EMD FT A-B-B-A set demonstrated on the Q, but of course the Burlington purchased FT's. I have a digital shot of CB&Q GP30 977 leading the EMD DD35B demonstrator with a Q GP30 trailing (a GP30-DD35B-GP30 set) at Naperville, IL on 11-29-1963. I seem to remember seeing a photo of one of the GE U-boat demonstrators (one of the later model black units with the small GE logo on the cab) on the Q, I think in or around Denver. I don't recall seeing any Alco or F-M demonstrators on the Q, which would not be surprising since the Q never had any F-M's and just a few Alco S-2's. Being mainly an EMD and (later) GE road, I don't think the Q was ever really that big on testing the oddball Alco's or F-M's.

Many different types of locomotives were found on other railroads that were not purchased by the Burlington. Being  a model railroader, I would like to run some locomotives in their demonstrator color schemes on my CBQ layout.  In order to authenticate their existence on the CBQ, is there a list or photos of older diesels that the Burlington "tried out" but never purchased (like an Alco RS-11 or a Fairbanks Morse Train Master)?  Thank you for any guidance.
