Bill, James, and Charlie, The following references show how the vestibule and non vestibule cars ends were lettered by the CBQ. The Passenger Car Library, Vol 1, CB&Q, p.147, p.187; Burlington Route Passenger Trains, Vol 2, Vista Domes and Slumbercoaches, p. 92, Burlington Route Passenger Trains, Vol 3, Passenger Train Problem Impacts the "Q", p. 53; Burlington Zephyrs Photo Archive, p.87; Burlington Route, Through Passenger Service in Color, p.74, p.75; Burlington Northern, 1972 Annual, p.45; Burlington Route Streamlined Observation Cars, Burlington Signature Cars, p.80 and back cover. I hope these references answer some of the questions presented. Jules Johnson Wheat Ridge, Co. From: "'Charlie Vlk' cvlk@comcast.net [CBQ]" <CBQ@yahoogroups.com>

The Conductor Lists show Car Names, so I would guess that the terminal switchers and maintenance people used them as well. The car numbers only appeared on the interior bulkhead and end doors, with perhaps some small maintenance stenciling on trucks and underbody components, so car numbers for named cars were not “intuitively obvious to the casual observer”. Recall that Pullman cars handled by all railroads did not carry any ID numbers so the that being the case is not a stretch.

James,
I don't think that the car number, such as Silver Lariat 4718, appeared on the outside of the car. Only the car name was displayed on the panel at the lower center below the windows. The only place that the number may have appeared was on the end door of the vestibule as you go from car to car or on the interior vestibule bulkhead, but I am not certain that is was displayed in either of those locations. The only number that appeared on the exterior of the car was the small lighted panel at the vestibule entrance that identified the car's position in the train, such as CZ-18 or CZ-23. The Atlas O scale CZ cars do not have a number on them. I could not find any detailed photos of the cars on line that showed a car number displayed although, there are lists of all of the cars, each with it's own number. I wonder how they kept track of the cars on a given train or for maintenance? Interesting question. I hope someone has a definitive answer.
