I was head brakeman on a "Troop Train" running as 1st 43 out of Lincoln, summer 1956 lead unit 9962C..complete with green classification lights AND FLAGS.  I don't recall whether this unit had been repainted for freight service..It was dark and I was quite excited.

Hello Hol, Mike, and All -

These locomotives were regular power on #35 and #36 when the Kansas City Zephyr was introduced in early 1953.  PAW
 
Nope, 9962ABC is one of the three F3
A/B/A sets (9960-62) purchased in 1947 for the California
Zephyr and used on the Exposition Flyer until the CZ entered
service in March 1949.  They were removed from passenger
service in 1954, regeared for freight service in 1955 and
repainted into freight colors a year or two after that.
