Your story in the Harry Bedwell thread about your dad chewing you out for reading Railroad Magazine reminded me of an incident in my life. I grew up in Elkhart, Ind., a major division point on the NYC. One Sunday morning, a railfan buddy came to our house to tell me an H-5 2-8-2 with a 12-wheel tender was at the roundhouse (most H5s had 8-wheel tenders) and to ask if I wanted to join him in riding our bikes out there. My dad was eating breakfast and overheard the planning.
He flung his knife on his plate and exploded, “Joe, why do you waste your allowance money on film to take pictures of those stream engines? Don’t you realize they’ll always be with us?
