I wish I had a dollar...or really anything of monetary value for every
time I read one of those old stories in RAILROAD...My dad used to go
"ballistic" when he caught me at it...It wasn't "girlie magazines" it
was RAILROAD..."Why are you wasting your time with that stuff that doesn't
amount to anything...You'll never amount rto anything if you keep spending
your time on that stuff...He threatened, and sometimes did take away other
"privileges for violations of his admonitions.
Whether or not I have "amounted to anything" is a matter of personal
judgment for those who know me, but I treasure my memories of those old
stories which I could relate to over the years since during my railroading
days things were still not too far removed from Harry B's day. We were
still making "drops"...running on "short time" on wait orders...picking up
orders on the fly...everybody had a nickname...most of which were unprintable
and "officials hiding out in the weeds" were to be feared.
I was fortunate to have railroaded during the time when things were
pretty much as they had always been....I've been privileged to share some of
these memories and experiences via this forum and in a couple of books which,
at least some of you have enjoyed.
Pete
PS don't tell anybody, but I occasionally pull out an old issue of
RAILROAD....find a HB story which I have read many times before, and under the
cover of darkness.....waste more time reading it again.

I agree, Pete. The stories in the book aren't "new", but still
interesting to read every couple years.
