I have been looking for some nice clear photos of the front and/or rear ends of "Q" (pre BN) GP 7's and 9's. The best reference I have found to date is Al Holck's book Burlington Route: Color Pictorial, Vol. 1, pp. 104-111. What I see varies a bit from unit to unit, but there appear to be 5-6 MU hoses per side on most units. Can anyone explain the functions of so many connections? Many other railroad GP photos show that their units had but 3 MU's per side. Is the difference between roads how the units were used. While many railroads only used GP's for freight the "Q" used theirs for both freight and passenger. Does this explain the need for so many connections? Does anyone have a nice clear photo they could share of this area of the front/rear of a "Q" GP showing the details close-up? Can anyone suggest another resource?
