Does anyone know anything about the line that the Burlington was planning on building through North Platte, Nebraska and then west? Have tried to find info in the Burlington history books but haven’t found any mention of it. One person I talked to said he heard from a person that it was called the Elkhorn and Northwestern but haven’t found anything to verify that either. I know there was a plan as Burlington Avenue in NP is on the old line and I have seen deeds from the Burlington to persons after the idea was abandoned.

The Burlington was going to build west from Kansas  City to the Pacific.  The problem was getting through the mountains, either parallel to the UP or the GN and NP in an area with few sources of business.  Instead, the GN and NP offered to steer all their east-bound Kansas City traffic to the CBQ at Laurel, Mont. if the Q stopped building west there.  In addition, Burlington also picked up traffic to Denver and parts of Texas.

A search on Google might provide more information.
