The guy that gave me the name indicated it was near the turn of the century. Being this far west the word Elkhorn in the name puzzled me and am not sure his info is correct. There were definitely plans by the Burlington to come through here as there is still roadbed north of Sutherland that was built but tracks were never laid.

Have you an approximate date for the expansion plan?

I’ve found references to “Elkhorn and Northwestern” and “Elkhorn and North Western” but these were in relation to Nebraska and South Dakota rates issues involving a number of railroads in about 1895.  However, I suspect that these should, perhaps, be references to two of the railroads involved –  Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley and the C&NW.
