Another great photo. I think this was the paint scheme used when 550 was
exhibited at the World Columbian Exposition, after which the herald on the
tender was replaced with “550”.
Burlington Bulletin 8 was dedicated to the railway mail service on the
Burlington.
There’s an article from Railway Age 1902 on the Fast Mail showing the timetable and its
timetable performance at http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101048999559#view=1up;seq=802

PAW, Rupert and List - Here's
another image from my Dad's collection. It's a builder's photograph
of No. 550 of Fast Mail fame:
Collection of M.L. Zadnichek
Regularly assigned to the Fast Mail in
the 1890s, No. 550 was built by the Rogers Locomotive Co., Patterson, NJ,
in 1893. Over the years, it was renumbered in 1898 to 1550 (Class A-6), in 1904
to 472 and in 1916 to 193. The 4-4-0 type was exhibited at the Columbian
Exhibition in 1893. It was retired and scrapped in 1922, replaced by
larger and more powerful locomotives, but not necessarily any faster.....
