PAW, Rupert and List - Here's another image from my Dad's collection.
It's a builder's photograph of No. 550 of Fast Mail fame:
Collection of M.L. Zadnichek
Regularly assigned to the Fast Mail in the 1890s, No. 550 was built by
the Rogers Locomotive Co., Patterson, NJ, in 1893. Over the years, it was
renumbered in 1898 to 1550 (Class A-6), in 1904 to 472 and in 1916 to 193. The
4-4-0 type was exhibited at the Columbian Exhibition in 1893. It was
retired and scrapped in 1922, replaced by larger and more
powerful locomotives, but not necessarily any faster.....
Does anyone on the List have an image of the locomotive in later years
carrying road numbers 1550, 472 or 193? Would be interesting to know if the Q
modernized it in any way. With its relatively high center of gravity and tall
drivers, I'd imagine that No. 550 would've given its crew a genuinely thrilling
ride at high speed. Yes, I think reprinting the Fast Mail article in the
Bulletin would be very worthwhile. Best Regards - Louis

Hello Rupert, Louis, and All -
Is the Burlington Route pamphlet "How the Greyhounds of the Burlington
Beat the Rising Moon" (or something
close to that) available somewhere online???
All of this sure seems it could be a nice feature in the BB or
Zephyr. PAW
