What I would call gravel is also small in size, like pit run, with even some 
sand mixed in.  It typically has not been processed or crushed, so the small 
rocks would be round.  For the color, my opinion is that gray with tan mixed in 
is about right.  For size, 4" to 6" is way too large for any kind of mainline 
ballast.  I wouldn't use anything larger than 2" if that is the smallest you 
can find.
