Thanks, Dave. I'll make a list of my most pressing questions. The alignment
chart and Glen's post mention slag and chatts. Having never seen either that
I know of, so I haven't a clue how what size they are or how they look. For
now, what ballast was used in the yard at Burlington? I've seen color
pictures of the commuter yard in Chicago and the Galesburg yard, and both
were essentially dirt by the 1960s. The ballast had sunk into the mud long
before, and grass was growing beside the tracks. I've found few color
pictures from the early 1950s, and none of the Burlington yard except the
B&W shots in BB#23.

I have a nine track staging yard laid and wired, and I'm going to ballast it
since it's visible in the family room. It represents either Galesburg or
Chicago, so I'll probably try to duplicate the appearance in the color
photos of Galesburg during the farewell to steam excursions of the late 1960
and early 1970s or maybe extrapolate backwards ten years to about 1953. The
next layout extension is the main and yard at Burlington, hence the
questions.

I've found few photos taken trackside in Winfield, and none of Yarmouth, Mt.
Union, or Crawfordsville except depot photos. I've taken recent photos of
all of those locations, but I have no pictures of the elevators or stock
pens at those locations. The only Washington branch photos I have are from
the Franzen collection.

Hi Nelson,

I can help you with that. In fact, let me know what else you might need for
Burlington or the Washington/Osky Branches and I'd probably be able to help.

I'm looking for scans of the mainline alignment chart from Illinois Jct.
through Burlington and West Burlington to see what mainline ballast was used
circa 1950. If anyone has the charts but not scans, I'd settle for a
description of ballast type by milepost markers.
