Thanks, Glen. What does slag and chatts ballast look like, e.g. aggregate
size, color, etc.? I grew up in Alaska far away from railroads.

Nelson:

I have a chart from 1957 that shows gravel on both mains from about MP 204
up to the east end of the Mississippi River Bridge. The date of the gravel
is not mentioned. It was replaced with slag ballast in 1960.

West of the bridge to the Burlington depot was chatts on both mains, placed
in 1943. I have another chart from 1967 that still shows chatts in 1943.
The area around the switches at Wood Tower was replaced with slag in 1960.

>From MP 205.9 to MP 206.7 was also chatts on both tracks placed in 1946.
>From MP 206.7 to MP 209.2 was chatts placed in 1944, and resurfaced with
slag fines in 1956. West of MP 209.2 was slag on both tracks, placed in
1951.

I'm looking for scans of the mainline alignment chart from Illinois Jct.
through Burlington and West Burlington to see what mainline ballast was used
circa 1950. If anyone has the charts but not scans, I'd settle for a
description of ballast type by milepost markers.
