The roof walk is cast on . The best way to deal with it is to invest in a
Nicholson MILL BASTARD file from your local hardware store or on-line through
Amazon. This is a mandatory tool for kit-bashing and working with any sort of
plastic models. This little tip was is courtesy of the late Rod "Bat"
Masterson, shared years ago as we discussed some of his models at a BRHS meet.
It has served me well through the years.
Concerning the NE12 car body, slowly work the file over the roof walk. It cuts
plastic quickly but leaves a smooth finish. Once the roof walk is gone, use
the same tool to round off the corners on the cupola and main car body. (If you
check photos in the Waycar book or other sources, you will note that all welded
corners on those cars were rounded.) After cleaning up the body casting this
way, you need to plug the extraneous toilet window at the front end.

Once those basic steps are done, you are ready to proceed with whatever
detailing you deem necessary. I would recommend the following:
Eastern Car Works 9051 Barber-Bettendorf Caboose Truck (Rebbox Semi-scale
wheels work well here also)
Moloco Freightmaster ME-10 end of car cushioning unit (draught gear/coupler
pocket which require Kadee #58 whisker couplers or another coupler with a
narrow shank)
Plano 200 roof walk supports/ 202 Apex slotted roof walk material
Precision Scale 33202 Flush Globe roof vent
Detail Associates LT 1005 Oscillating Mars Headlight

I will leave you to your own preferences concerning the under-frame and grab
iron replacement.
