It is interesting that this one is painted what registers as "white" while th 
LOC/ Shorpy pic they are dark.

The Erie ad is dated 1920 while the LOC pic is part of a series by Arthur 
Rothstein for the FSA in 1936. I would guess they are painted the typical 
mineral red.
