As part of my signal research, I found references to the use of 2 blade train order signals as early as 1892 on Lines East between Aurora and Burlington. I seem to recall that there were specific instructions related to the use of the 2nd blade, but I can't find where I filed that information right now. I think the use of the 2nd blade was in lieu of a Caution Card Form (B). In manual block territory, where the train order signal was used as a block signal, in certain territories designated in the timetable, a 2nd train could follow a freight train with the use of this Caution Card. I think the 2nd blade was added to the TO signal to be used in lieu of the caution card. I will try to find more specific information. I plan to do more research at the Newberry during the week after the Spring Meeting, so I may be able to find out something specific regarding Superior. This is an unusual signal at the depot in Superior Nebraska. The top one would be the train order signal but what is the bottom one for? Thanks in advance Gene Tacey |
