They were cab ventilators. They had hinges at the front and could be raised to 
ventilate the cab.

I was looking through pictures of various CB&Q steam engines and noticed a lot 
of them have what looks like a rectangular sheet metal platform on top of the 
Cab roof? Was this just a place to walk on if the roof needed work or was it 
something else? I also do not see "sliding roof hatches" on the cab roofs like 
a lot of USRA or other engines? Was this just a CB&Q thing?
