Charlie - From the tender, could be a R Class engine. I fully agree, it's  
Thayer, Iowa.

The  third of the Thayer wreck postcards with the steam crane lifting 
carcasses  into a gondola confirms it was Thayer, IA….the locomotive in the 
photo 
 (haven’t tried to determine the number or class) is most definitely a Q  
engine.   Unless the Q came in on another railroad to clean up its  cars in 
the wreck (highly unlikely) it is Thayer IA on the  CB&Q.
