Information that the late Norm Keyes found in the BN
Change Number Record Accounts back in 1985 indicates that BN 972544 was formerly
Great Northern X1575. This was in fact the third car in GN's modern X series to
carry the number X1575. X1575(3rd) was received from Baldwin Locomotive Works on
November 28, 1909, as Tender 1029 with an E-14 Class 4-6-0 locomotive.
Locomotive 1029 was rebuilt to Class H-5 4-6-2 No. 1360 at the Delta
(Washington) shops from December 10, 1925, through April 16, 1926, and Tender
1029 was renumbered as Tender 1360 at about the same time. Tender 1360 was
rebuilt to a Style 36 (10,000 gallons water) tender at Delta, completed January
23, 1928. At this point in time GN's tender rebuilding program was to stretch
the water tank and frame by 5 feet to increase water capacity from 8,000 gallons
to 10,000 gallons. Tender 1360 was rebuilt as wedge plow X1575(3rd) on February
25, 1953. In November 1979 it was renumbered as BN 972544. It was still active
in 1995 at the time of the BNSF merger. I quit keeping track of GN equipment at
that time, as the old GN records were moved from St.Paul, MN, to Kansas at the
time, and the GN had been gone for 25 years.
GN probably did more tender swapping than any other road
I know, so they kept fairly complete records of their tender numbers and which
tenders were assigned to which locomotives. As of April 1943 Tender 1360 was
assigned to O-1 2-8-2 3087. Sometime between then and June 1949 it was moved to
O-1 engine 3012 and remained with that engine through at least December
1951.
While it is not a former Q car, I probably do have a
diagram for it. If anyone is interested I can go take a look.
Probably more than you wanted to know.
Best regards,

Subject: [CBQ] BN 972544 (A Q
conversion?)
All-
I came across a photo of BN 972544 on the Web. This looks like an auxiliary
water tank to wedge plow conversion. It appears as though it is still assigned
to BNSF's Twin Cities Division. Does anyone know the history of this car? I
suspect it is GN or Q, as the SPS had very limited numbers of conversions (SPS
28 was a gon-plow) and I have not come across any NP plans for aux tank
conversions (or gons). I have uploaded an image of the 972544 to the Files
section under the folder Whstlpnk Items. If this was a Q car, does anyone have
a photo or diagram of it for service under the Q?
