Glen,

In that position in the train, immediately ahead of the observation, the NYC car was probably a charter service car, which were frequently carried in the CZ consist. I suspect that there was also a 10-6 sleeper CZ11 ahead of it providing regularly scheduled New York service.

Look on the bottom of page 52 in the book 'The Domeliners&#39; by Patrick C. Dorin (chapter 4 on the California Zephyr). It's only a partial view of the sleeper just ahead of the dome observation (at Bond, Colorado according to the caption), but it's obviously a NYC TTG smooth-sided sleeper. I don't know if it is a 10-6. The photo is credited to Frank McKinlay, Rail Photo Service.
