Bill and others,
From everything that I have read and know, the regular New York 10-6 sleeper, identified in the train as CZ11, was always one of the Budd built SS CZ cars, of which there were 19 including the Silver Rapids. The car selected for New York when the train departed Oakland was what had come in the day before or any pool stock available. The same would have been true at the New York end, but there probably was no CZ pool cars kept there. Did another non CZ 10-6 sleeper ever get substituted in New York? I am sure it was possible due to a failure, but there is no evidence that it was a frequent occurrence. Even the Q in Chicago very seldom substituted a non CZ car in the regular CZ consist.
However, the CZ frequently carried non CZ cars in the consist immediately ahead of the observation. These cars, which came from a number of RRs, were usually cars in charter service. Some days there would be more than one and occasionally, there would be a non CZ coach at the head end of the train, also in charter service. Certainly, an NYC sleeper in charter service was a good possibility in the CZ consist.

Other have indicated that the NYC leased a sleeper from WP or DRGW for their contribution to the CZ. Just wondering. I am a collector of such oddities and exceptions.
