Those point locks were interesting....specifically when you forgot there was one and you unlocked the switch..lifted the lever and "pulled your guts out"...My My you said...I forgot about the point lock.

Pete,
That is amazing. Even in my best physical condition, I would be chicken to try that one. The neatest one I saw was when the west bound local pulled by a 4-6-0 was in town doing sit outs and pickups one afternoon. They had left their consist on the passing siding by the house. When they were ready to leave town, the brakeman was manning the west switch. The engineer pulled the train out at a reasonable pace and when the way car cleared the points he knew the brakeman had to stomp down on the point lock, align the points for the main and lock the throw which would take at most a couple of minutes. Well the engineer didn't wait. He put the engine at close to full throttle without slipping her. By the time the way car passed the depot he was doing a very fast clip with the brakeman still at the switch. The man didn't even try to catch the way car, but instead just walked to the depot and went in. He knew another train was due in soon so he had the agent set the semaphore to slow approach. When the following engine was even with the depot he swung on and rode to the next stop for the local.  Some of the guys told my dad that the brakeman tried to bean the local engineer with a baseball size lump of coal  before he got off the engine carrying him. Don't think he hit him, but I am sure he got the man's attention and was not left behind again.

My attitude toward what I would or would not attempt changed one winter day on the Mt Morris branch. I grabbed the handhold and pulled up but my boot was encrusted with snow. It slid straight through the boxcar's foot stirrup toward the wheel and rail. I was in a bent backward position hanging on desperately with cold-numb fingers. Fate or dumb luck saved me. Doug

I saw a "classic" case one afternoon at Langdon, MO...Some train...probably the north local had completed it's work at Langdon and the rear brakeman was standing on the platform having a "chin fest" with the operator....They didn't have many cars and the acceleration was rapid.

As the waycar approached I thought...that guy will never be able to get on...He did something I never saw another brakeman do...Instead of catching the curved grab iron at the rear of the waycar....He just started running as fast as he could before the waycar got to him...When the front platform caught up with him he just turned and JUMPED ON...never touched the grabirons....during my trainman days I never saw anybody do it that way again and I certainly didn't ever try it.

.It was also a source of pride for some of the old engineers to leave town "at speed"...in an attempt to leave the rear end boys behind.

witnessed that event more than once while growing up on the Q in York NB.
