"Tractor tread plate" = You mean track shoes?

I can imagine this plant required lots of tires. Aurora (Montgomery)
produced front end (and crawler) loaders at startup, introduced the 944
wheel "traxcavator" (wheel loader) in late 1959
http://www.cat.com/50years-wheel-loaders, and also the first hydraulic
excavator (225) in 1972. Soil compactors and wheel dozers have been produced
there for a long time too.

>I can tell you we spotted partially finished machines from Peoria into
Montgomery in the 70s

Sounds like a Manufacturing-In-Transit type move.
