Rupert,
At first, I thought there MIGHT have been a Belmont turnatble, as the
Burlington & Missouri reached Belmont before the tunnel was completed, making
Belmont the "end of the line". However, Wikipedia states that the B&M RR
reached Belmont on August 17, 1889, while the tunnel was holed through on
August 25, 1889. So, Belmont was the line's terminus for a scant eight days!
Despite the rapidity with which rails were expanded in those days, eight days
may not have been a sufficient time in which to construct a turntable.
Other histories tell of the construction of various buildings in Belmont, but
no mention is made of a turntable. For example, one of the references cited by
Wikipedia is a survey of historic buildings in Dawes County, in which the
following statement is made:
"The town had strong ties to the railroad as many railroad employees took up
residence in the town. The railroad built a depot, section house, and water
tank at Belmont. Among the railroad employees were members of its "Bridge
gang," who were responsible for the
maintenance and upkeep of the Belmont Tunnel."
No reference to a turntable, which would likely have been named, I should think.
Additionally, I believe there would be visible evidence in satellite photos,
even for something this old, as this region is fairly arid and such features
would be long-lasting here. I see few places where such a structure would even
be possible, given the terrain.
