Most of the rail rests I remember were made out of the excess ends that were cut off of piling. Later, gangs were discouraged from putting extra rails on rail rests because the railroad thought it was a waste of materials but they sure saved a lot of time in case of a broken rail. It was a case of being penny wise and pound foolish!
