I just received my advance purchase of an ABA set of the new Athearn F3s. The models are very nice, however the Mars lights on the two A units are wired incorrectly to the headlight, hence they don’t work. They turn on, dim, and go out in reverse with the headlights. Apparently, the Chinese manufacturer hardwired the FX5 output of the Tsunami decoder to the headlight. I checked with my dealer, and all CB&Q A units he has in stock have this defect, while the Mars lights operate properly in the D&RGW A unit he tested.

I’m offering this as a heads up to other buyers. It should be a simple matter to rewire the decoder output, but purchasers shouldn’t have to do that just because Athearn or their Chinese manufacturer screwed up. A warranty claim does no good since all CB&Q units apparently have the defect. It’s either rewire or return for a refund.
