Just another use for these old warriors! It makes me feel old because I remember them as the newest thing on rails for the Q. I remember it as if it was yesterday, seeing the first one hundred 100 ton hoppers loaded at the Zeigler #3 mine in mid-July, 1963. It was a huge deal with all kinds of Q officials in attendance. Doesn't seem like it was almost fifty years ago! The train was put together in the north yard at Christopher and for road power had three of the new GP-30's (the only ones, in Q days, that I ever saw south of Centralia) and had a new NE-13 waycar. It went to a power plant in the Twin Cities area. It was the first coal moving on unit train rates on the Q. I got to ride in "The Buick" hi-rail car (over the highway) with Ass't Superintendent Wyburn Traut from the mine to the north yard to see the train pull out.

The ones I have seen have been loaded with used ties.

These old hoppers are in ballast service and can not be interchanged due to the 40 year rule.
