The SDP40F used a hollow truck bolster, which standard SD40's did not.
This was suspected, though never proved, to be the cause of the
derailments.
Thanks!

Karl,
I am not sure why the SDP40Fs that you were on, rode so rough. The SDP40F
was a standard SD40-2 with a full width carbody, a steam generator and a
higher gear ratio. Of course, you were probably doing more than the usual
freight speed of 60 mph on the C&I. If your photos were taken at the same
time, it was obviously quite cold. All locomotive suspension rides harder
in cold weather.
When the BN was testing locomotives in the great SDP40F derailment
investigation boon doogle, based on instrumentation, the only locomotive
model that rode better and had better track dynamics, was the the EMD "E"
model.
