Interesting comment on track dynamics of E's. I never got to ride one on the "rougher" Mainline or C an I, but on the smooth East End the E9 was far and away my favorite drive. SD40s (long deck model whatever that was) were good also. And on the flip side, the designer of the U boat had to really hate engineers

Karl,

I am not sure why the SDP40Fs that you were on, rode so rough. The SDP40F was a standard SD40-2 with a full width carbody, a steam generator and a higher gear ratio. Of course, you were probably doing more than the usual freight speed of 60 mph on the C&I. If your photos were taken at the same time, it was obviously quite cold. All locomotive suspension rides harder in cold weather.

When the BN was testing locomotives in the great SDP40F derailment investigation boon doogle, based on instrumentation, the only locomotive model that rode better and had better track dynamics, was the the EMD "E" model.

I was on #7 and #10 between CUSCo and Savanna and Savanna and CUSCo.  5'-45" on duty !!  Those 40's were the SECOND worst ridin' engine I've EVER been on !!!!!
