They're still arbitarily declining them John :>) We still have some left, but
you boys are correct, even the Griever won't help the new guys with the
schedule, let alone the Company. I collected an "unprogrammed side trip" for a
basic day last trip. We were called to pick up our load at Donkey Creek
Junction, but after we got in the van, the DS called and said it was broke down
at MP-32 (used to be Antelope siding before they triple tracked) and we better
go down there and get it. Far out! That's inside "Zone B" and we were
"programmed" "Zone A", ka-ching :>)
We got down there, and the RFE, mechanics and the Engineer I relieved had been
trying to restart the second motor, a fairly new GE. It had shut down with the
"automatic start-stop" but it didn't restart :>) "Can't fix it" everybody said
and left.
Well, I went back, found blank screens and no "go", so I did what we used to do
with a "U-boat" that was sick. I knocked all the breakers down and pulled the
battery switch. When you do that, the motor forgets everything it ever knew.
After a couple of minutes, I closed the switch and put all the breakers back
up, and it started to re-boot, but it was going to take a while, and we had the
Belle Ayr helpers on the rear, so we took off for Donkey Creek.
We got stopped at Cordero, so I went back to see what was going on with the
second motor. The screens are back up, and it's tellin' me to either start it
or pull the battery switch again, we're wastin' battery here :>) So I put it
in "Start", and pushed the button. Riiiinnnng goes the warning bell inside the
carbody, an' then "clunka, clunka, clunka" an' it's runnin' again :>) We're
saved! We don't hafta' go into the Donkey Creek "Velocity Yard" and mess with
pickin' up another motor :>)
That's what 35 years experience will do for you :>) Just got called for a
"Vehicle" train......gotta' go.
