Tom, I might be wrong, but I don't think that happened. Unlike the CB&Q, the MILW had several detour options over its own lines. MILW lines from Milwaukee-Horicon-Portage, Watertown-Madison-Portage, Chicago-Walworth-Madison-Portage, etc. were used. If needed, the Hiawathas could also be detoured on MILW rails from Chicago-Savanna-Dubuque-River Junction (LaCrosse). Amtrak today, of course, uses the old CB&Q for occasional detours for its "Empire Builder", but this is because much of the former detour MILW trackage is either abandoned (Cambria-Portage) or has track with low speed limits.
