That's fine, but people like list members aren't usually hit with the latest-and-greatest stuff. They are usually gotten by things that have been out and in the wild for weeks and months. That's why a good virus/spam block is almost totally effective.
As to the techs using Avast!, they were probably tech savvy enough to know where not to browse or what not to open, so a half baked program like Avast! was probably sufficient. Plus, most of the tech guys I've known that swore by the freebies, rebuilt their boxes on a regular basis. Most won't admit it was becuase they got infected.
Dell techs? I won't go there. I've bounced Dell equipment from enough IT departments to know their quality.

Until it's in the wild, Symantec, McAfee, Avast!, AVG, etc. won't be able to develop definitions to remove them. Can't tell you the numbers of problems I've had at various jobs, even when all computers have expensive, paid for, AV protection like Syamantec/Norton (including Endpoint), McAfee, Kaspersky, and currently Microsoft ForeFront.
When I worked at Dell, 90% of the techs there used Avast!, BTW.

Most email and anti virus spam filters are about 98% reliable. If it dumps it in the spam folder, DON'T OPEN IT, there is more than likely a very good reason it ended up there.
And, even if it was a mistake, more than likely its because the person sending it did something that made it look like spam (no subject, one line body saying "Hey look at this!" with a link and nothing else, etc). The sender needs to learn how to send email properly. If the ask why you haven't responded, tell them to send it again. Usually when they have to do it again, they do it right.
Last, before I step off the soap box, get a GOOD anti virus/spam blocker. That usually means a paid for one, not a freebie, like Avast! or Panda. Trust me, I've been doing this long enough to know that the freebie ones are not much better than a bandaid on a knife wound. They will only catch the most obvious of intrusions.
