Leo..The road switcher concept was not in play during my time on the Lincoln and Wymore Divisions  56-58.  The main line locals as well as some locals which ran over both the main and branch lines took care of any industrial switching.
At Crete Mills at Crete, NE about 25 miles W of Lincoln...where it was reported that that industry at that time was the largest shipper on the CB&Q the switching was taken care of by two mainline locals whose "schedules" were set up to provide a night switch 6 nights a week and a mid day switch on those same days.

The night switch was performed by a Lincoln-Wymore local and the work encompassed about 6-8 hours...I was forced on that job every summer that I worked...I hated it..It was all night work with a 3:30 or so am start out of Lincoln on the outbound trip and an 8:00pm start out of Wymore on the return trip...These jobs just paid local pay...and, of course, there was pretty good OT on the return trip.

On the RI there were several jobs working the heavily industrialized territory between Joliet and Bureau and Peoria..These might have been called road switchers, but they just had specific territory and I don't think that they could move cars between stations...just do the work at each station and set up the pickups for road trains...It was a protected territory for these jobs and road crews could only pick up and set out at these stations...

You will recall our conversations a few months ago re handling the short cars for these intermediate stations where only one pickup and setout were permitted.

Pete

As to pay rates we both are remiss in not mentioning the 3rd class of frt pay. The road switcher rate which was the highest rate and one that didn't come along until (?) well trying to find that in the files.

Don't know if you had any road switchers out your way. There was a25 mile round trip limit on them and the crew could run in and out of origin terminal as many times as needed w/o penalty.

As to the files if I hit the lottery I would do just as you describe.

Leo...I very much envy and admire your devotion to duty  ie   keeping a "real job" and perusing those old files...Were they in my  possesion I would closet myself and only emerge from devouring them for reason of "intake and output"

I'm looking forward to the products of your efforts.

If all goes as planned I'll be attending the Mendota meet this fall...

Note to Phil W. if he reads this...My understanding is that the Fall meet is Nov 2nd..that's a Saturday..I believe that would be the day (evening) that the FRIENDS OF THE ROCK ISLAND meet at BI..If that's the case I may stay over and go to BI after the BRHS ends for the FRIENDS meeting..

Pete I too had never heard or seen any thing called "roustabout rate of pay" until I read this 1890s file. I am making the assumption that since the crew was formally asking for wayfrt rate(local rate) that  roustabout was equivalent to thru frt rate or maybe between the two.

Yes when I was in service there were two rates of pay, thru frt and local rate which we all commonly referred to as wayfreight rate. The 3 s/o or p/us were the deciding factor. The difference was minimal. But I hope in the future the BRHS members will read an article in the Bulletin wherein a .39/day rate of pay difference increase was important enough to have a series of claims be appealed to abritration. That claim became the basis of a large file and that generated the article about a little remembered aspect of Q business on a certain line segment.

Something along the lines of for lack of.........................

As to the "jacket" you would have to leave it with me on a summer loan until the fall meet as the current plan is do a "shoot" this spring or summer. Nothing at the spring meet.
