Robert,

You said  "Then he'd sell it on his own web biz for 2x what he paid on eBay."  To me, that infers he sold it.  If he couldn't sell it, then, yes, I'd say he was being foolish.  The beauty of eBay, is it makes finding things you never knew existed possible.  I've found all sort of Q information/items that I didn't know about.  I'm not claining you get "deals" on eBay (you can on some things) but it gives you an opportunity to buy hard to find items.  I've bought and sold thousands of things on eBay over the last 10 years.

To Jan's original complaint, I agree, it's not a good medium to buy quality slides, because there are many people with deep pockets would will buy them up at high prices. I, on the other hand, have been able to pick up a great variety of 8" x 10" print photos of railroad equipment at reasonable prices - so it works for me.

I said he put them on his website for twice, I didn’t say he sold them. Last I checked, he was stuck with selling most of them for $50 less than the Trumpeter one, just to get rid of them.

There are too many examples of people doing things like paying $100 for a $50 gift card, or 4 figures for a box of Twinkies. The only real deal I ever got was for one of the Revell 1/200 Boeing 2707 kits. I paid about $25 for it.

Robert,

If he could sell it for 2X what he paid for it, how does that show he "lacked common sense?!"

Because of eBay, I have been able to pick up things that would have never been possible for me to get in the past.  I've been outbid, but most of the things I've lost have come around again.

My experience with eBay is that it's a place for people with too much spare
money and not enough common sense on how to spend it.

A few years back, I was searching for a large scale HMS Hood model. Every
time I'd bid, this other guy would bid ridiculously large amount for it and
get it. Then he'd sell it on his own web biz for 2x what he paid on eBay.
There was poetic justice though, after 6 months of this and probably hauling
down 10 to 12 of them, Trumpeter models released a 1/350 version and sold it
for $150, 50% of what he was selling the eBay ones for.

...anyone noticed how hard it is to purchase CB&Q slides/photos on ebay
anymore?

I realize it's a free country and that's how capitalism works, but it's
really annoying to try to get decent slides when apparently some people have
no problem spending any amount of money to get a slide...I'm talking $60-$80
bucks PER SLIDE (and sometimes more) for some.

I just can't justify that kind of expenditure for single slides, because I
will just scan them and put them on my website for people to view for
free...I suppose some people are intent on making a buck by selling copies
to others. It has jumped tremendously in just a year or so.

Just venting some frustration is all...
