The 1936 Twin Cities and Denver Zephyrs both had trainsets that were lower than the motors (diesel electric locomotives) that pulled them.  Their first cars (the Auxiliary Power Cars that provided electricity to the cars) had a step down in the roofline to blend the locomotive profile with the train.
