Boxcar wooden grain doors were distributed to section crews and stored. In 
anticipation of the shipping or harvest season the grain elevators and  
railroad agents would make an estimate about how many doors would be needed by 
each shipper and they would by dolled out as needed. They were expensive and 
the railroad wished to keep track and retain them so records were kept. This 
system and boxcar grain shipping was still prevalent in Northern Illinois in 
the early 70s but quickly disappeared.
