Richard sounds like the “floor racks” were not in the reefer, causing you to deal with the sill. Floor racks are found in reefers to allow circulation of the cold air underneath the load. Picture the floor covered with pallets. Some were hinged to fold up out of the way, others were removable, but when in place they would bring floor up to the level of the door opening. They may have been removed or out of the way because they could not handle the weight of the barrels.

Doug - The racks were gone, the car had been used to haul grain. During the big grain rush in the early 1970's, a lot of old refrigerator cars and boarded up stock cars were used to move grain. I suppose for some reason the racks were removed, wish they had still been in the car. Box cars good enough for grain  service came at a premium at harvest time, elevator men baited crews with the evil spirits to get a couple of good grain cars in the days before the steel covered top grain hoppers. My how things have changed. - Richard
