I meant to add the following information from Dennis:

That looks to be a beer bottle and the location looks to be the site of the Schoenhofen (sp?) brewery at Canalport and 18th Street just west of Canal Street. That building still stands as a historic landmark and I believe is being converted into loft condos or offices. Many small breweries existed throughout the City, started by immigrants who had family backgrounds in brewing in Europe, many German, Austrian and other east European ethnic groups.
The name and date I believe are still on this building front near the roofline.
Buildings from the early 1900's had no mechanical (pumped water) sprinkling systems and after the Chicago fire I believe they were designed with if not required by code to have massve water tanks that were roof mounted and held full tanks of water solely in case of fire to supply the sprinkler heads.
Over the years most of these water tanks have been removed on those few buildings that still remain but many of the steel support frames and towers are still in existence atop the buildings throughout Chicago.
I believe there is a Chicago Paper Grading building right at the junction at the PRR mainline and St. Charles/ B&O overhead lines south of the Q's 90 degree bend at 18th Street and just north of the Chicago River bridge at 21st Street that still has its water tank.

Larry and all who responded,

Thanks for the information.  The link below is fascinating.  Some great information about the brewery.  I've often wondered what that bottle-shaped structure was for.  Dennis Popish (BRHS member) sent me the following additional information:

I've done some enhancement with the zoom.  Unfortunately there is a lot of grain and artifacts with their scans, so the quality is rather poor.

I think the name was something like Schoenhoff,. Also recall Smitty talking about switching it back in the day, when he was making out the House 9 list one afternoon while we're sitting around main office in Cicero

He said there were unlimited thirst quenchers available while switching. Seem to recall something about a hose with a valve on it

There was a Brewery served by the Q the name of which escapes me at the moment. It was near 22nd St and the building is a designated architectural landmark. I think they made soda after prohibition.
The location looks to be about right

List,

Any of you Chicago pros have a clue of what this "bottle" tower just off of the Q's Chicago Union Station coach yard would be? It shows up in many pictures and it doesn't look like a water tank. Sputnik Jr getting ready to launch?!
