Hi Karl:
I found out a little more about the combined trains at Galesburg. This was out
of a 1969 Q timetable.
It looks like #11 the Nebraska Zephyr was combined with #5 the KC Zephyr
remnant from Chicago to Galesburg. At Galesburg they were split or a small
train for Quincy was waiting at the depot. The reverse was true. #12 the
eastbound Nebraska Zephyr arrived Galesburg to be combined with # 6. I still
haven't confirmed if the trains were combined or if the passengers changed
trains and the KC train was turned and waited in Galesburg for the next
westbound #11 and #5.
Westbound # 11 Nebraska Zephyr arrived Galesburg 1:55 pm and left at 2:05 pm
for Omaha. # 5 left Galesburg at 2:05 pm for Quincy. There is no #5 in the
Chicago - Galesburg timetable.
Eastbound #12 Nebraska Zephyr arrived Galesburg 6:00 pm and left at 6: 30 pm
for Chicago. #6 arrived from Quincy at 6:15 pm. There is no #6 in the Chicago
- Galesburg timetable.
10 minutes one way seems a very short time to switch cars on and off trains and
30 minutes the othermay be built in fir a late train.
Later in the day and into the morning the following happened.
It looks like #3 the Ak Sar Ben Zephyr was combined with #19 the (American
Royal Zephyr?) from Chicago to Galesburg. At Galesburg they were split or a
small train for KC was waiting at the depot. The reverse was true. #4 the
eastbound Ak Sar Ben Zephyr arrived Galesburg to be combined with # 20. I
still haven't confirmed if the trains were combined or it the passengers
changed trains and the KC train was turned and waited in Galesburg for the next
westbound #3 and #19 like above.
Westbound # 3 the Ak Sar Ben Zephyr arrived Galesburg 12:30 am and left at
12:50 pm for Omaha. # 4 left Galesburg at 1:05 pm for KC. There is no #4 in
the Chicago - Galesburg timetable.
Eastbound # 4 Ak Sar Ben arrived Galesburg 2:05 am and left at 2:25 am for
Chicago. #20 arrived from KC at 1:55 am. There is no #20 in the Chicago -
Galesburg timetable.
Here you have 20 and 30 minutes between trains which suggest there might have
been switching going on between trains.
